Summer is approaching and it is important that we find ways to keep our kids engaged in healthy activities. Kids tend to misbehave out of boredom, so plan ahead and prepare an arsenal of activities for the kids during the summer break. Let them in on the planning so they can share their creative ideas. Staying engaged with your kids keeps you involved and builds an even deeper bond with them. Here are a few of our favorites activities!
Make your own games. Get a supply of colored cards, children’s scissors, glue and anything else you may want to make some fun games. Games like Hoopla, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Tic-Tac-Toe or Snakes and Ladders can all be easily made at home and will keep the children occupied for some time.
Build a garden patch. Dedicate a small patch in the garden to the kids. Plant flowers, herbs, lettuce — anything that grows quickly and gives them the satisfaction of having produced something.
Cooking and Baking. Plan a cooking or baking day once a week and let the kids take turns choosing a meal or dessert. Have them read measurements and help prepare the menu.
Paint. One of the nicest ways to express your creativity is to use paint. Get large sheets of paper and lots of paint. Go mad and use your hands and feet – it’s liberating. To avoid stress, prepare the area well and cover with plastic or newspaper. Have some water on hand to wash when you are finished.
Nature walks, swimming, biking…. Plan more active days where you are exploring nature, splashing water or riding bikes as a family.
Build a fort or tree house. If you’ve got the time and the resources these are great! Forts can be indoor and outdoor and made from sheets, blankets, or tents. This is a good way to get your kids creative thinking skills going.
Tree houses are more difficult but can be a fantastic learning project with the right instructors. Kids can learn to use tools and build things on their own.
Garage sale or rearranging day. Plan to declutter your home, organize rooms, and sell or donate what you don’t need. You may feel refreshed and as if you’ve walked into a completely new home!
